Abe Brown, Community Leader & Former Trustee Passes

Dr. Abraham R. Brown, a former Trustee, pastor, teacher, and community servant, entered the presence of the Lord on Saturday, September 11, 2010.  Abe, as he was known in the community, worked tirelessly to improve the conditions of the disadvantaged and downtrodden.  For 38 years he worked in the Hillsborough County school system as a teacher, coach, and administrator before retiring in 1988.  In 1976, he founded Prison Crusade, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to ministering to inmates in the prison system.  Today, Abe Brown Ministries continues to develop programs enabling at-risk individuals, their spouses, and their children to achieve productive and spiritually fulfilling lives.

Rev. Brown served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Trinity College of Florida from 1995 to 2008.  In 1997 the College conferred on him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree.  In 2004 he received the College’s highest service award, Prokope.  Dr. Brown was known for his discipline and compassion and endless commitment to building the Kingdom of God.

Abe Brown is survived by his wife of 46 years, Altamese, his three daughters, Vanessa Brown-Bennett, Kimberly Brown-Blount, and Quida L. Brown, his sons-in-law, and grandchildren.

A wake has been set for Rev. Abe Brown on Friday, September 17, 2010 at First Baptist Church of College Hill. Rev. Brown's family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.  A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Idlewild Baptist Church.
